Buhari Not Running Voodoo Economics, Says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the country’s economy under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration cannot be equated with the reckless fiscal policies that were the vogue when the Peoples Democratic Party was in office.

Against the background of the looming economic recession in the country, the Governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar, said on Thursday that the way out of the economic lull is for us to expand our economy and make it more competitive.

The governor who spoke to journalists at the APC’s national secretariat in Abuja shortly after being inaugurated to chair the committee of the Ondo state governorship primary, said the present hardship would have been averted if past leaders had started cutting their expenditures to save for the rainy day.

“The problem with the past leaders was they should have started cutting these expenditures from time. For instance, what Obasanjo did with the cement was good. We stopped importation of cement into Nigeria. Why do we have to import rice, why do we have to import maize, why do we have to import wheat? Why do we have to import milk? At the time the going was good the government was supposed to have given credible intervention for us like what Obasanjo did with the cement to encourage the production of rice”, he said.

While reacting to calls by the PDP for President Buhari to resign on account of the worsening economy, APC said the present state affairs could be traced to the reckless policies of the previous administration.

The party assured Nigerians that the President Buhari APC-led administration is solidly committed to resuscitating the economy in the quickest possible time and in the best interest of the people.

Halliburton Scandal: EFCC Traces N13.5b To Private Account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered how $32.5 million of about $200 million fines from Halliburton Energy Services was allegedly paid into a private account.

The cash was said to be missing because the anti-graft agency could not ascertain whether or not it was remitted into the Federal Government’s account.

A top shot with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC), Mr. Roland Ewubare, who was one of the lawyers involved in the Settlement Agreement with Halliburton, has been given up to September 15 to submit a letter authorising him by the Federal Government to open the private escrow account.

Ewubare told the EFCC that, as the then Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), he acted in national interest in opening the escrow account.

He is in the United States to retrieve the relevant documents relating to the account for the EFCC.

The EFCC has grilled the Managing Director of Halliburton Energy Services in Nigeria, Henry Oki.

Oki gave the details of how agreements were signed between the Federal Government and Halliburton in London.

About five companies have paid fines in line with a Settlement Agreement with the Federal Government .

The breakdown of the remittances by the five companies is as follows: Julius Berger ($35m); Siemens (Euros 30m); Snamprogetti ($30m); Halliburton Energy Services ($32,500,000); and Japan Gasoline Corporation ($26, 500,000).

Top Nigerian lawyers who oversaw the agreement are a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Joseph B Daudu (SAN), Mr. E.C Ukala (SAN) Chief Godwin Obla (SAN), Mr. Roland Ewubare and Damian Dodo (SAN).

Some members of the legal team were conferred with national honours for the recovery.

EFCC detectives have discovered that the missing $32.5million was transferred by Halliburton into FGN JP Morgan Chase New York Swift BIC Code CHASUS 33, Account No. 000742501406865.

It was gathered that the account was titled Madison Avenue/ Escrow /CBN/ FGN further Credit to FGN Litigation Settlement.

The EFCC team later discovered that although the account was opened in the name of the Federal Government, it was a purely private account which was managed by Ewubare and others as signatories.

A top source said: “Out of over $200million fines paid, about $32.5million(N13,585,000, 000) is missing. Our team only succeeded in tracing the transfer of the cash into an account in New York but there is no record of whether or not it was remitted into the Federal Government Consolidated Account.

NPA Bans Mini Skirts And Jeans Trousers - Career

The management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reportedly banned its female staff from wearing miniskirts and jeans trousers to work.

This is contained in a statement released by its general manager of NPA where it warned that erring staff will be adequately sanctioned.

The statement read, “It has been observed that despite the issuance of a couple of circulars vide HQ/GMHR/CON/G.3/128 of 25th August, 2008 and HQ/CR/AD/G.1/3039 of 19th December, 2014 on corporate Dress Code, some employees still indulge in improper dressing to the office.



“For the avoidance of doubt, it is hereby reiterated that inappropriate dressings such as tight jeans trousers, cut-off trousers, mini-skirts/dresses, tummy and navel shirt transparent/exposing outfits, spaghetti strapped dresses, mismatched clothes, rubber slippers, tattered shoes and rough hairstyles, (to mention but a few) that are unnecessary distractions would no longer be condoned and will henceforth attract appropriate sanctions.

“In view of the foregoing and to further maintain a positive corporate image of a reputable organisation, all divisional, departmental and sectional heads, especially heads of personnel are once again enjoined to ensure monitoring of compliance of employees dressings with emphasis on decent, moderate and smart national and formal English wears.”

It would be recalled that Miss Hadiza Bala Usman was appointed as the Managing Director last month by President Buhari.

I Can Confirm That Original Shekau Was Killed, 2nd Shekau Killed- General Irabor - Politics

Major General Lucky Irabor, Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Nigeria’s military operation set up to battle Boko Haram, on Thursday insisted that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is dead.

He insisted that the individual originally identified as Shekau has indeed been killed.

He said this during a tour of Adamawa State as part of the formations under his command.

“I can confirm to you that the original Shekau was killed, the second Shekau was killed, and the man presenting himself as Shekau, I can also confirm to you that few days ago, he was wounded. We are yet to confirm whether he is dead or not”.

He further said that the Army does not make statements that are not based on facts.

The General, said the Nigerian troops fighting insurgency in the northeast, will continue the military operations until the last terrorist is taken out.

He also mentioned that there had been division among the Boko Haram as a result of the constant pressure put on them by the Army.

Man Arrested For Smuggling Rice As Dead Bodies

The ban on rice importation and biting economic conditions are forcing daring smugglers to freight bags of rice as coffins carried in ambulances.

This unprecedented antic of moving rice in an ambulance under the guise of corpses from Benin Republic into Nigeria was uncovered yesterday at the Seme Border by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) who promptly arrested the vendor.

According to Customs officials at Seme Border, the suspected smuggler, Moses Degbogbahun, arranged 11 50kg bags of rice in place of a corpse in his Volvo ambulance with Lagos registration number DV 74EKY. Luck, however, ran out on him when he was subjected to a rigorous search by an officer who had observed him move “corpses” across the border regularly without being searched.

His frequent movement across the border made the officers at Aradagun area of Badagry to suspect foul play prompting them to insist on seeing the “corpse”. But they were, however, amazed to see that they had allowed so many “corpses” across the border without knowing the identities of the dead (rice).

The Customs mobile patrol team leader stated that the frequency of the said ambulance patronising the international route with the “dead bodies” had become alarming making it necessary to ascertain the identity of the dead.

Rice smuggling across Seme Border became a lucrative trade to warrant such antic when the Federal Government banned rice importation into the country in its attempt to boost local capacity.

Meanwhile, over 50 million bags of imported rice, worth over N1 billion, are currently trapped in various warehouses in Cotonou, Benin Republic, following the ban on foreign rice import into Nigeria.

Many importers who violated the import restrictions by government are now regretting because they can no longer push the imported commodities into Nigerian markets.

One of the importers told Daily Sun that many of them have lost their collaterals to banks because they cannot service their loans.
“We have lost a lot. The banks are not giving us breathing space. They have confiscated all our belongings,” he said.

Daily Sun’s checks revealed that the new Controller General of Customs (CGC), Colonel Hameed Ali, had threatened to discipline the Customs Area Controller in charge of Seme Border, Victor Dimka, if any grain of imported rice finds its way into the Nigerian market.

To demonstrate his seriousness, Ali, three weeks ago, signed an agreement with the Beninoise government to the effect that any ship from Benin ports must be escorted by the Benin Customs and handed over to Nigerian Customs. He threatened to stop trade relations with Benin Republic if the government continues to allow contraband goods into Nigerian markets.

This tough stance by the Nigerian government had pitted the importers against their bankers because most of them borrowed to import the goods. They had targeted the ‘ember’ months – the Eid-del Kabir and Christmas festivities – to flood Nigerian markets with imported rice. These bags, it was discovered, have been warehoused for over six months under an unwholesome condition.

How can Nigeria revive its economy?

The Federal Government should pump money into infrastruture development, which will create more jobs and boost liquidity, economists and private sector players said yesterday.

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its Second Quarter Report released on Wednesday, said the economy contracted by 2.06 per cent to record its lowest growth rate in three decades.

The report said the economy shrank by 0.36 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 to hit its lowest point in 25 years. Unemployment grew from 12.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 to a record high of 13.3 percent in the second.

Finance Minister Mrs Kemi Adeosun said: “It’s the worst time possible for us”. She, however, assured all that things will get better.

President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that Nigeria will be prosperous again. He spoke in Osogbo the Osun State capital, at the inauguration of a mega school built by the Rauf Aregbesola administration.

A development economist and financial Expert, Odilim Enwegbara, who is the Chairman/CEO at Pan Africa Development Corporate Company (PADCC), said the government should leverage on its expansive revenue base and spend its way out of the recession.

He said: ”To help our economy, the government needs to pump trillions of naira into infrastructure projects and trillions of naira into social intervention policies so as to make more money available to the citizens to boost their purchasing power, which will make these cash-strapped citizens start consuming, not imported goods and services, but mostly locally made goods.”
By consuming locally made goods, Enwegbara said, more money will get into the hands of local people and artisans. This, he said, will kick-start the once excluded grassroots economy.

In his view, President Buhari needs to inject a minimum of N3 trillion annually into the economy.

”Buhari’s social interventionist policies too should, besides making the school feeding programme a priority, monthly stipends of not less than N10,000 (instead of N5,000) should be given to millions of our poor families, widows, elderly, mentally and physically- challenged Nigerians. This should be promoted with the rigour it requires.

Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Director-General Muda Yusuf spoke of an urgent need to inspire investor confidence by ensuring that policies are not only credible and sustainable, but also consistent.

He described this measure as critical in building the confidence of investors, adding that there is the need for the injection of private capital by domestic and foreign investors to turn things around.

Yusuf called for government’s stimulus spending to fast-track the growth of the economy, including the speedy implementation of the 2016 budget.

He said this could have very clear positive impact in pulling the economy out of the woods.

According to the LCCI chief, the energy issue has remained a sore point as a result of the poor supply and the high cost of gas, which in most cases is not available.

He said: “Economic empowerment of majority of our citizens by increasing the purchasing power of the economically excluded is the magic wand which increasing their consumer power should increase production and new jobs. In other words, if by empowering the marginalised and excluded millions deep-seated economic malaise will finally be resolved.”

The Vice President (North West Zone), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Ibrahim Usman, said to move away from recession, the government must embark on infrastructure development to attract money into the system.

He said in other climes, the government drives the economy, giving it direction, but he admitted that there is no quick fix to get out of the recession.

Usman, who is also the Executive Chairman, Powerseal Nigeria Limited, called on the government to quickly end the Niger Delta militancy issue.

The economic think tank of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, led by Bismark Rewane, expressed optimism that “the lower-than-expected figures for July signal a possible tapering in the rate of increase in consumer prices which might improve market sentiment.”

Usman added that market players “are expected to react accordingly”.

The death of NFF Technical Director and former Super Eagles coach, Shaibu Amodu, has rocked the football world and thrown Nigerians into mourning, days after the shocking death of football legend Stephen Keshi.

As football lovers and Nigerians in general mourn the demise of Amodu, one of the country’s most successful coaches, we look at 15 things you probably may not have known about him:

1. He has coached the Super Eagles more times than any other coach, having led the national team five times. His first appointment was Super Eagles Coach in 2001 and guided the team to secure qualification for the 2002 World Cup only to be sacked months to the tournament.

2. As Super Eagles coach, he led the national team to secure World Cup qualification twice but was fired before the tournament on both occasions. After being denied the opportunity to lead the team to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, Amodu suffered the same fate in 2010 ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

3. He helped break the jinx of northern football clubs’ inability to win the FA Cup in 1989 when he led the BCC Lions (of Gboko) to win the trophy.

4. Shaibu Amodu was born in April 1958.

5. He started his football career as a striker and played for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes.

6. His playing career ended after he broke his leg.

7. Apart from BBC Lions and the Super Eagles, Amodu managed such as BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Shooting Stars.

8. His coaching career extended beyond Nigeria as he also managed Orlando Pirates in South Africa.

9. He was first appointed as the Super Eagles coach in April 2001.

10. He was re-appointed manager a second time in April 2008.

11. Amodu was fired twice by the NFF in February of a World Cup year. His first appointment in 2001 was terminated in February 2002 he helped the team qualify for the World Cup. His second appointment was also terminated in February 2010 again after he helped the team qualify for the World Cup.

12. In May 2013, he was appointed technical director of Nigeria’s national teams.

13. He was re-appointed Nigeria manager in October 2014, replacing Stephen Keshi.

14. It was his fifth spell in charge of the country’s national team after which the Keshi returned to the role two weeks later. Amodu took over temporarily as the manager of the Eagles again after the late Keshi was fired in July 2015. He was replace by Sunday Oliseh on a permanent basis later that month.

15. His death comes three days after that of Keshi and he would be buried today according to Islamic rites.

6 Year-old Girl Burnt To Death In A Lagos Church

The Lagos State Fire Service said a six-year-old girl was burnt to death in a church in the early hours of Saturday in Egbeda area of the state.

The Director of the service, Mr Rasak Fadipe, said that the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. at Faith Revival Church.

Fadipe said that the inferno affected the boys’ quarters of the church while a vigil was going on at the main auditorium.

“We met the fire raging when we arrived. It was after the fire was put out that we discovered the little girl’s burnt body in one of the rooms.

“The church authority was yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. We finally put out the fire at about 5 a. m,” he said.

His body is being moved from the Stella Obasanjo hospital in Benin to his home town in Okpella.

EFCC Re-arrests Fidelity Bank MD Nnamdi Okonkwo And Top Officials Over New $153 Million Di

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos has rearrested Nnamdi Okonkwo, the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank PLC, over the discovery of $153 million in new funds also laundered through the bank by former Nigerian oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke. Also under arrest is one of the bank’s Heads of Operations.

Sahara Reporters learnt that the two top management officials were arrested and detained at the Lagos offices of the EFCC after fresh revelations emerged that the former oil minister laundered the money through the bank for purposes of rigging the 2015 elections in favor of former President Goodluck Jonathan.Mr. Okonkwo had previously not disclosed the transactions to investigators at the EFCC, and the discovery prompted another security sweep of the bank.

Pipeline bombing: Alleged militant leader arrested in Bayelsa

Operatives of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps arrested Suoyo Nathan, the alleged leader of the armed gang that bombed the Tebidaba-Brass pipelines in Bayelsa state

– A senior official of NSCDC confirmed that the suspect was apprehended and would be prosecuted at the conclusion of the ongoing investigation

Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested the alleged leader of the armed gang that bombed the Tebidaba-Brass pipelines along the Azuzuama-Ikienghenbiri creek in Southern Ijaw local government, Bayelsa state.

Vanguard reports that the suspect, identified as Suoyo Nathan, was arrested on Monday, June 6, by operatives of the anti-vandal unit of NSCDC with the assistance of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) surveillance team.

However, security operatives are still on the trail of two of his accomplices identified as Iyalewei and Fyneboy.

According to security sources, a full-scale operation was ongoing in the area backed by the air force fighter jets and helicopters on surveillance as well as gunboats.

Adam Johnson Sentenced To Six Years In Prison

The former England international has been handed a custodial sentence following a hearing at Bradford Crown Court on Thursday and will now spend six years in jail


Former Sunderland and England winger Adam Johnson has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Johnson was found guilty by jury of one charge of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl earlier this month at Bradford Crown Court - he lodged an appeal against that conviction on Thursday - having already pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and one of grooming on the opening day of his trial on February 10.

Johnson, whose contract was terminated by Sunderland following his guilty plea, ran into court to avoid the media scrum and then listened to a statement from the victim in which she detailed the impact the case has had on her personal life and schoolwork.

The prosecution also highlighted the way Johnson's supporters had continued to harangue the victim on social media.

For the defence, psychologist Dr Philip Hopley claimed Johnson was "socially and psychologically immature" for his age and his physical development growing up "was somewhat slow".

Dr Hopley also recalled how Johnson was unable to discuss the crimes he had committed due to the shame he felt, with the footballer suggesting "being in prison would offer some relief. I just want to let people I have hurt get on with their lives".

Johnson, according to Dr Hopley, also told him "explicit messaging was common practice among his fellow footballers".

Summing up, judge Jonathan Rose said: "All of this is entirely your own responsibility and your own fault.

"She had only just turned 15 when you began to groom her...because you found her sexually attractive even though you knew her to be just 15.

"Your standing and your offending are the only reason this child has suffered abuse."

Johnson, who showed no emotion when the verdict was delivered, has signed the sex offender's register and has a restraining order placed on him against the victim. He must also pay £50,000 prosecution costs.

Johnson's parents were in court on Thursday but his sister Faye stayed away, having explained why in a Facebook post.

She wrote: "Today is the sentencing for my brother, the worst day of my life.

"I just wanted to let all of the supporters know that I will not be attending Bradford Crown Court, the reason for this is Adam has always been my hero, my brother and my best friend, I just don't want him to see the pain in my eyes!

"Instead I will be at home with my little boy, Adam's number 1 fan, Adam's daughter and the mother of his child Stacey.

"I remain proud of my big brother and I am 100 per cent behind him and I always will be."

After Johnson's conviction, Sunderland released a statement refuting claims the club knew of the former Manchester City man's intention to plead guilty.

However, chief executive Margaret Byrne subsequently resigned from her position citing a "serious error of judgment" in recommending the 28-year-old be allowed to play for the club despite being told by Johnson's lawyer in May 2015 that his client had kissed the girl and sent her a series of suggestive WhatsApp messages.

“When I decided to lose weight, I worked full-time in an office where I sat at a desk for 40 hours each week. I also worked part-time at a health club and took evening classes to complete my Master's degree. Monday through Thursday, I'd leave my house at 5am and not return until after 10 at night.
Obviously, my schedule was a challenge, but I knew if I started to make excuses, I'd never lose the weight, so I toughened up and created a fail-proof plan that helped me drop more than 20 pounds.

...Here's what helped me, and how it can work for you too.

1. Schedule your workouts
When I worked in an office, I used daily planner that kept me organized with all aspects of my life—from projects and school deadlines to grocery lists and social events. I wrote down everything, including my workouts. On Sunday afternoons I'd spend some time scheduling my workouts for the week, just like I would with other obligations.

I'd also pick a couple of group exercise classes at my gym and schedule them like appointments that I could not miss. Seeing my work week all laid out with plenty of time for exercise helped me to stick to my plan.

2. Become a morning exerciser
Late meetings, evening events, happy hour with colleagues—so many things got in the way of my evening workouts, so I became a morning exerciser. Working out first thing in the morning guaranteed that I fit it in before my day got carried away and excuses popped up.

Even though I'm naturally a morning person, becoming a morning exerciser was no easy task! The first few mornings were really hard, but the more I forced myself to do it, the easier it was and eventually it became a regular part of my routine.

3. Track calories
In the past, I halfheartedly kept a paper-and-pen food journal, but it was time-consuming and inconvenient to calculate all of those calories, so hundreds of them often went unaccounted for each day. So when a friend told me about a free online weight-loss journal that tracks calories, exercise, goals, and progress, I knew it would make keeping food journal simpler.

Filling out my serving estimates online helped me realize that I underestimated portion sizes. Even though I was eating mostly nutritious foods, I was serving myself too much, so I began using measuring cups at home to learn how to identify a healthy serving.

4. Plan (and pack) your lunch
Every Sunday I sat down and planned a week’s worth of quick, travel-friendly lunches. Brown-bagging what I ate during the day meant I had more control over how many calories I consumed. Lunch could be leftovers from the previous night's dinner or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with veggies and honey mustard.

Planning lunch ahead of time helped me stick with healthy options instead of buying mouth-watering snacks and greasy slices of pizzas. Plus, once I bought the food and had it readily available in my kitchen, I had no excuse for not packing a nutritious lunch.

5. Leave healthy foods visible
Instead of hitting up the vending machine or fast-food restaurant for an afternoon snack, I bought five pieces of fresh fruit each week and displayed them on my desk on Monday morning. Whenever I wanted a snack, it was the first thing I saw, so I was able to keep my munchies light and nutritious. I also hated to see fresh food go to waste, so I never let a day go by without eating a piece, which helped keep my hunger steady so I didn't overeat later in the day.

6. Make gym visits convenient
If getting to the gym was difficult or interfered with my work schedule, I knew I'd never go, so I joined a gym close to work. I could go in before work, during my lunch break, or after I got off. The sight of other exercisers motivated me to get my butt in gear.

I made my exercise routine even more convenient by renting a locker at the gym. Having everything that I needed for a workout already at the gym kept me from making excuses and helped me stick to an almost-daily sweat schedule.

7. Plan workout dates with others
To switch things up with my workouts, I often asked my co-workers if they wanted to go for a run at weekends or on day-offs. Having a fitness buddy to rely on really helped me get in a groove with my workouts and kept me motivated. Plus, exercising in a new way with someone else kept my workouts fun and exciting!

8. Abide by a one-drink rule
I created the one-drink rule for when I went out after work with co-workers. Happy hour was what got me in trouble with my weight in the first place (hello, beer and sugary drinks), so I knew I needed to treat these outings differently if I wanted to fit into my clothes again. (I also didn't want to be the girl on a diet sipping water!)

My new go-to drink was white wine because I knew I'd savor and sip it slowly. Choosing the drink that took me the longest to consume saved me calories because I passed on a second round, and usually at that point most people were heading home.

9. Fit in a weekend workout
If I missed a workout during the work week, I made up for it by exercising on Saturday morning. Of course, I'd preferred to sleep in on the weekend, but my morning workout always started my weekend off on the right foot. Instead of snoozing the day away, I seized it, which felt great knowing that I could enjoy the rest of my weekend stress-free!”
